2013 Track Season Summary

As the 2013 track season came to a close with the state meet, school records continued to fall, making this the most successful season of its 14 year history. A total of 9 school records were broken - 7 for the boys and 2 for the girls.

At the girl's state championship meet in Albany, Eagles top female performer, Megan Gavin, broke the 1600 meter school record held since 2007. With less than a twenty-four hour rest, Megan came back to finish third in the 800 meter run. Emily Buwalda was also a state finalist as she finished 6th in the 400 meter. In the final event at state, Emily and Megan teamed up with Kaylee Callahan and Breck Jones to end the season with yet another record breaking run in the 4x400 meter relay, placing fourth.

The Boys season finished a week ahead of the girls in no less of record-breaking fashion. Top male performer for the Eagles, John Towne, participated in 4 events at state while breaking his own school record in the Long Jump. At the sectional state qualifier, John broke his own record in the triple jump. Along with John's two individual records, he was also a member of two record-setting relay teams. The 4x100 meter team of John Town, Gerald Mitchell, Chandler Moeller, and Isaiah Walker just missed qualifying for state by less than two one hundredths of a second; however, the 4x400 relay team did qualify and finished 8th. Those members are Gerald Mitchell, Evan Bohannan, John Town and Brent Blackwell.

Senior Chase Carroll, who has participated as a member of the Eagles track team since 7th grade, made his second and final appearance at the state meet in Jefferson. He has broken his own school records in the shot and discus five times this year and he placed 5th at state in both of those events.

Six seniors graduate this year, (the most of any year). We will miss the experience and leadership of Emily Buwalda, Brent Blackwell, Evan Bohannan, Conor Gavin, Chase Carroll and Hunter Delashmit, but budding new talent is on the horizon waiting for the chance to break yet another record!

Varsity Baseball - Tuesday, 4/23/13

Opponent:  Landmark

Result:  W 7-6

The Eagles (8-15, 3-15) only got 6 hits, but made every one of them count as they defeated Landmark Christian Academy 7-6 down in Fairburn.
Tied at 5 after 5 innings, Zach Cornell started off with a triple. Dylan Crumbley(1 for 2, with 2 walks, SB, & 2 RBI's) then drove in Cornell. Crumbley stole second and came on around to score what would be the winning run off an error by the War Eagles. Rabon Martin went 2 for 3 with a walk & 2 RBI's, Zach Cornell had a triple & an RBI, Canon Robinson had an RBI single and 2xSB, and Patrick Martin had a single.
Patrick Martin pitched 5 innings but left with No Decision allowing just 3 Earned Runs and 2 un-earned runs on 7 hits, 5 walks, while striking out 5. Zach Cornell got the win going the final 2 innings, allowing just 1 un-earned run, 1 hit, 2 walks, and striking out 1.
The Eagles host Mt. Pisgah on Thursday in their final regular season Region match-up. (Still working on the consolation game for Friday against either Fellowship or Whitfield.)

Varsity Baseball - Monday, 4/22/13

Opponent:  Fellowship

Result:  W 5-0

On Senior Night at NCCS everything came together to give the seniors something to remember. The Martin cousins tag-teamed to help the Eagles (7-15, 3-15) snap out of a 8-game losing streak.

Rabon Martin was 3 for 3 with a triple, walk, and 2 stolen bases and his cousin Patrick Martin was 2 for 4 with 3 RBI's and a stolen base of his own. But it was Rabon Martin's complete game shutout that made all the difference. Backed by an error-less defense behind him, Rabon allowed just 2 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 11. Martin faced just one over the minimum as the Eagles picked off 3 of the base runners. Also gathering key hits for the Eagles were Dylan Crumbley (RBI Single), Canon Robinson (Single & an RBI Double), Josh Schibi and Zach Cornell each had doubles, while Tripp Ross and Texas Bollinger each had singles.

Varsity Boys Tennis - Tuesday, 4/16/13

The Varsity Boys tennis team qualified for the state tournament today at Darlington School. They not only qualified in the top four, but will play for the region championship at Walker School tomorrow at 3:30pm.

The boys are guaranteed a top two seeding for the state tournament no matter what happens, which means we will host at least one state tournament match. It also means that the boys varsity tennis team will win their first region trophy since entering GHSA!

Boys reached states by beating Fellowship and Whitefield Academy. They were led by the outstanding play of Sophomores Riley Malonson, Mark Crafton, Jared Miller, Joseph Loo, and Freshman Matt Raftis. Payton Ward and Jonathan Soulis also played tough matches.

Varsity Baseball - Tuesday, 4/16/13

Opponent:  Whitefield

Result:  L 2-3

The NCCS Eagles seemed to be on the right track out-hitting the Wolfpack 4-2. Outstanding pitching by Zach Cornell of the Eagles was not enough to bring the win in this Region game. Cornell struck out 6, only allowing 2 hits. Unfortunately, one was a 2 run homer by Kemether of Whitefield. Patrick Martin and Dylan Crumbley both had singles driving in the Eagles two runs as well as both adding a stolen base. Cornell and Robert Gnann also had singles.
