Second Grade Specials

ART | WEEKLYStudents reach higher levels of creative, critical and problem-solving skills by creating artworks to express individual ideas and experiences, as well as common subjects and themes. Curriculum introduces and reviews the elements of art and encourages students to identify them in works of art and in God's creation. Students continue to develop an understanding of color mixing and color families (including primary, secondary, warm, and cool). Students grow in application of various media, techniques, and processes of two- dimensional and three-dimensional works of art, including drawing, painting, weaving, embroidery, printmaking, ceramics and sculpture while using tools and materials in a safe and appropriate manner. A look at various cultures and master artists is also incorporated.
MUSIC | WEEKLYStudents develop their understanding of melody, including solfége and note naming on the treble clef staff. They learn to play 2-3 note melody patterns on classroom instruments and add a half note to their rhythmic repertoire. They continue to work on improvising utilizing rhythmic and melodic skills. Students begin identifying orchestral instruments by name and describe music using appropriate musical vocabulary. Singing and performance skills are developed through Grandparents Day, Christmas and Spring Programs. Students learn that music is a gift that they can use to worship God.
P.E. | WEEKLYPhysical Education emphasizes continued motor and movement skill development, and the development of an appreciation for participation in physical activity while fostering habits of lifetime wellness and inclusive social skills. They also set and achieve goals in personal, cooperative and competitive activities. Students gain leadership skills through positive attitudes and promoting peaceful conflict resolution.
