Odyssey of the Mind’s creative competitions combine the excitement of athletic competition with fun-filled (and often zany!) mental gymnastics! Teams match wits and abilities together to develop creative solutions to broadly defined problems. Activities allow students to work with others and provide them with the opportunity to learn creative problem solving, brainstorming, and teamwork. This group is open to students who have completed one or both of the Think Tanks and are committed to preparing for the competition in the spring. Some Saturday commitments are required as we prepare for competition, as well as a weekend commitment (TBD) for the competition. The group will work on the official competition problem and choose one of these five categories to present their solution to the long-term problem: Vehicle Design; Technical Design; Classical Architecture, Art, Literature, Documentary; Balsa Wood Structure; or Fine Arts Performance. They will also use their skills to solve a problem assigned on the day of the competition, using skills they gleaned as a team during their preparations. They must work on a given budget with no outside assistance in brainstorming or building from parents or coaches.
