The 5th and 6th grade chorus at NCCS performs a Christmas program.

We hope you are gearing up to enjoy family time and good food as we enter “the most wonderful time of the year!”

For many of us, however, we could likely replace the word “wonderful” with “the busiest” or “most expensive” or many other superlatives to describe the holidays. So, before this season officially begins, we want to encourage you to pause. Take a deep breath. And intentionally decide what would make THIS holiday season truly “the most wonderful” for your family.

As many of you know, the weeks leading up to Christmas day are referred to as advent. The word “advent” literally means “the arrival of a person, thing, or event.” For Christians, this word takes on a much more significant meaning as we spend the Christmas season celebrating and remembering the glorious truth that God, in the person of Jesus Christ, came to do for us what we could never do for ourselves. Now that is truly “wonderful”!

In the greatest act of love that has ever been displayed, Jesus came to this earth in the form of a newborn baby (Isaiah 9:6, Matthew 1:23, Luke 2:7, Philippians 2:7-8), lived the sinless life that we could not live (2 Corinthians 5:21, Hebrews 4:15, 1 Peter 2:22), and died the death that we all deserve to die (Isaiah 53:5, Romans 5:8, 1 Peter 2:24), so that we could be reconciled with God (2 Corinthians 5:18-19, Romans 5:10, Ephesians 2:13). This is what makes Christmas worth celebrating!

Each week during advent, we will be sending out a video featuring some of our seniors reading advent devotionals to help us tune our hearts toward Christ this season. We hope you share these videos with our younger students, so they can glean from their older Eagle role models!

We also want to equip our NCCS community with some resources to help you observe and celebrate advent as a family. We encourage every NCCS family to purchase one of the following advent devotional books (or another that you find!) and spend 10-15 minutes reading together as a family each day.

Come Let Us Adore Him | Paul David Tripp

Unwrapping the Greatest Gift | Ann Voskamp

From Heaven | A.W. Tozer

Waiting Here For You |  Louie Giglio

Advent Conversation Cards | Kids Read Truth

25 Days of the Christmas Story | An Advent Family Experience

Or, if you prefer a (free) video version, check out these advent resources from RightNow Media! Did you know that NCCS provides a FREE RightNow membership to all of our families? HERE is your official invitation to sign up for RightNow Media. Simply follow the instructions to log in, and you can start using it immediately.

We hope this encourages and equips you to celebrate our coming Savior, truly making this your family’s MOST wonderful time of the year!
