8th Day 1 | Washington, D.C.

DAY ONE | 8TH GRADE SPRING TERM

Written by Mrs. Alex Dunn, 8th Grade Faculty

Day 1 is DUNN!

What a whirlwind of a day! THANK YOU, parents. Our 8th grade trip departed eight minutes early. That had to be a good sign, because the airport lines were surprisingly manageable. Students had time to grab breakfast, catch up with friends, and get settled before boarding.

The flight was smooth, and once we landed, we hit the ground running. Our first stop was Pentagon City Mall, where students enjoyed lunch and squeezed in a little shopping. Let’s just say Sephora had a very good day. ;-)

Next up: the Smithsonian museums. Students had the freedom to choose where to explore, but the most popular stops seemed to be the National Archives and the Air and Space Museum.

Four girls huddle together looking at the Washington Monument in the distance.

From there, we headed to Ford’s Theatre and the Peterson House, where we learned about the events surrounding Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. Although it was fascinating to some, there may or may not have been a few students dozing off during the presentation. Perhaps they thought they were back in school? :-D

After a quick souvenir stop, we made our way to Blackfinn Ameripub for dinner. The students were very happy, and the food was great, but the servers were even better, handling our group of 72 like pros!

To wrap up the day, we visited the World War II Memorial, Signers’ Island, and the Washington Monument, where we caught a beautiful sunset over the Lincoln Memorial. It was the perfect ending to a full day of sightseeing.

Finally, we arrived at the hotel, where Mr. Fraser led devotions. And when I say the kids were ready for bed, they were ready.

There were many laughs, minimal tears, and a lot of fun on Day 1. We’re having an amazing time and can’t wait to see what Day 2 brings.
